This first house was built in Lumpkin in August of 1830. The town was incorporated the following December. Named for former Georgia Governor Wilson Lumpkin, the county seat of Stewart County is situated in the 23rd District of , originally Lee County on land lot number 82.

In 1836, Lumpkin contained thirty-two dwelling, fourteen stores, three confectionaries, three taverns, houses of worship for Methodist and Baptist, a male academy, Court House, one blacksmith shop, three lawyers and two doctors.

The first Court House was built in 1831 of hewn logs. In 1836, when the Indians were giving considerable trouble, it was used as a block house for the protection of women and children. The second Court House was ordered built in 1835 but was not completed unitl 1837. This building served until 1895 when a new brick building was constructed.
